I was able to choose a Labcorp location and schedule an appointment. Check in was easy, and I only needed to provide my name and DOB. They were able to locate my order in their system. They were already aware that my labs were paid for prior to the appointment. I had my labs done on a Wednesday, and I received my results by Saturday. Great experience.

About Thyroid Tests

A thyroid test is a blood test that measures levels of your thyroid hormones.

The hormones produced by your thyroid gland play an important role in how your body uses energy and help regulate your weight, body temperature, and mood. High or low levels of thyroid hormone can lead to a wide range of health problems, including weight gain or weight loss, anxiety, insomnia, hair loss, and constipation, among others.

You may need a thyroid test if you are experiencing one or more symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include anxiety, increased heart rate, weight loss, and difficulty sleeping. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, constipation, hair loss, and weight gain.

A thyroid test is performed as a blood test. During the test, a healthcare provider uses a small needle to take a blood sample from your finger or arm. Your blood will then be placed into small tubes or vials that are taken to the lab for further analysis. The entire testing process usually takes no longer than 15 minutes.

A thyroid test requires no special preparation and comes with no serious risks. However, some people may feel slight discomfort or bruising on the finger or arm where blood was drawn, which usually goes away within minutes.

The TSH thyroid test is usually the primary test used to check your thyroid levels. Based on results from the TSH test, your doctor may order or perform additional thyroid tests, including the T4 test, T3 test, or thyroid antibodies test, to diagnose or rule out certain thyroid disorders. Imaging tests, including CT scans, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine, may also be ordered to diagnose or rule out thyroid diseases.

If you are diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, your doctor will contact you to discuss your available treatment options. Many thyroid disorders can be successfully treated with medications, radioiodine therapy, or surgery. For example, hyperthyroidism may be treated with antithyroid medications that cause your thyroid to make less thyroid hormone, or they may be treated with surgery to remove most or part of the thyroid gland in instances where the thyroid does not respond to other treatments.

Thyroid Test FAQs

  • How much does a thyroid test cost?

A thyroid test may cost anywhere between $0 and $200 depending on different factors, including health insurance coverage, copay amount, and testing rates set by the provider. Thyroid testing costs may also depend on the number of thyroid tests you are getting and your geographical location. Contact the thyroid test provider directly to learn more about costs related to testing.

  • Does insurance cover thyroid testing?

Many health insurance plans cover thyroid testing, especially if your doctor orders this test based on your symptoms and health condition. However, you may still be required to pay the copay. Contact your insurance provider directly to confirm your benefits and whether thyroid testing is covered by your health plan.

  • Who should get a thyroid test?

Anyone experiencing symptoms of an underactive or overactive thyroid should get a thyroid test. Symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) include weight gain, constipation, and irregular menstrual periods. Symptoms of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) include weight loss, rapid heart rate, and anxiety. Ask your doctor if you should get a thyroid test if you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms.

  • How do they test your thyroid?

Your thyroid function can be tested with a simple blood test. During the test, a healthcare professional takes a small sample of blood from your arm and places it into one or more test tubes or vials. Your blood sample is then evaluated in a lab to check your thyroid levels, which can indicate whether you have hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or another thyroid-related health condition.

  • How should I prepare for a thyroid blood test?

A thyroid blood test requires no special preparation. However, if your doctor is performing other blood tests at the same time, you may be required to fast for several hours beforehand. Ask your doctor or the thyroid test provider about any special preparation steps you should take within the days and hours leading up to your appointment.

  • What is the thyroid blood test called?

A thyroid blood test is called a thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test. A thyroid blood test may also be known as a thyrotropin test, T4 test, T3 test, or thyroid antibody test. The T4 and T3 tests can help your doctor diagnose hyperthyroidism. A thyroid antibody test measures levels of thyroid antibodies to help your doctor diagnose Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s disease. Your thyroid test provider can give you more information about your thyroid blood test.

  • How long does it take to get thyroid test results?

Thyroid test results can return within several hours or days, depending on how quickly the lab can evaluate your sample. Some labs may contact your doctor with the results, which may require you to wait until you hear back from your doctor. Other thyroid test providers may contact you directly with results the moment they’re available. Contact the test provider directly to find out when you can expect your results.

  • Where should I get a thyroid test?

Thyroid tests are available from many healthcare providers, including primary care doctors, urgent care centers, and walk-in clinics. Ask your primary care doctor if their office does thyroid testing or if they can refer you to a provider offering this service. You can also use Solv to locate top-rated thyroid test providers in your area that offer same-day and next-day appointments.

  • What can affect thyroid test results?

Pregnancy, medications, and certain medical conditions are some of several factors that can affect thyroid test results. For instance, high-dose biotin, corticosteroids, and diabetes medications can affect thyroid test results, as can normal hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. Many doctors take these factors into consideration when performing a thyroid test, and they may ask questions about your current health and medical history beforehand to identify potential problems and irregularities that may throw off test results.

  • Can I do at-home thyroid testing?

At-home thyroid tests can be purchased online or from various drugstores and pharmacies. These tests typically require you to prick your finger to collect a blood sample, which you can then send to a lab for analysis and diagnosis. At-home thyroid tests usually range in cost between $30 and $200 depending on the type of test you get. They will include detailed instructions on how to perform the test and where to send your blood sample.
