I highly recommend Doctor Dawson to anyone seeking a thorough, patient, and genuinely caring doctor. When I visited Dr. Dawson and the nurses, I expressed my concerns and outlined all the different tests I wanted. They listened attentively and provided me with the necessary information, making me feel safe and comfortable throughout the process.

Urgent care
My 3 year old son was irritable because he did not feel good. The nurse was EXTREMELY rude. Seemed as if she was annoyed by my son who cannot help he does not feel good. Yes it is hard with a toddler but to hand me the 02 monitor because she gives up on getting it, I should have been paid to be the nurse at that point. The physician was very nice and helpful. I won’t be back due to the rudeness of the nurse.

Urgent Care in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta's emergency care landscape changed materially on November 1, 2022, when Wellstar closed Atlanta Medical Center and displaced roughly 50,000 ER visits per year onto the metro's remaining hospitals. Grady Memorial — already among the top five hospitals nationwide for ER visits — became metro Atlanta's only adult Level I trauma center. With Georgia opting against full Medicaid expansion and the metro's uninsured rate sitting near 12.3%, urgent care has become the practical first stop for non-emergencies across Atlanta's neighborhoods.

How long are urgent care wait times in Atlanta compared to the ER?

Atlanta urgent care wait times typically run 20 to 45 minutes for walk-ins, with same-day online bookings through Solv often reducing in-clinic time to under 15 minutes. By contrast, Grady Memorial Hospital's ER and Emory University Hospital Midtown have both been flagged as "severely" or "dangerously" overcrowded on Georgia's statewide capacity tracker since AMC closed, with non-trauma waits sometimes exceeding several hours and inpatient holding waits stretching far longer. For routine acute care — strep, UTI, sprains, lacerations, asthma flares — urgent care is dramatically faster and a fraction of the cost.

What services do Atlanta urgent care clinics offer?

Atlanta urgent care clinics treat acute, non-emergent illnesses and injuries — strep and flu testing, COVID testing, ear and sinus infections, UTIs, sprains and minor fractures with on-site X-ray, lacerations requiring stitches, allergic reactions, mild asthma exacerbations, dehydration, and minor burns. Major providers across the metro include Piedmont QuickCare, Wellstar Urgent Care, Emory Healthcare Urgent Care, AFC Urgent Care, and CareNow Urgent Care. Most clinics also offer travel vaccines, sports and school physicals, occupational health screenings, and DOT physicals. Grady's Walk-In Center provides safety-net urgent care for uninsured and Medicaid patients on Pratt Street downtown.

Does urgent care in Atlanta accept Medicaid?

Yes. Georgia Medicaid (administered through Amerigroup, CareSource, Peach State Health Plan, and WellCare) is accepted at most Atlanta urgent care clinics, including Piedmont QuickCare, Wellstar Urgent Care, and Emory Healthcare Urgent Care. Coverage acceptance varies by chain — confirm with the clinic when booking. Georgia's Pathways to Coverage program (the state's limited expansion alternative) covers a smaller population of working adults, and Atlanta urgent care groups generally accept this coverage as well.

What insurance do Atlanta urgent care clinics accept?

Atlanta urgent care clinics accept Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Kaiser Permanente Georgia, Medicare, TRICARE, and Georgia Medicaid plans. Self-pay rates typically range from $135 to $225 for a basic visit. With metro Atlanta's uninsured rate near 12.3%, several urgent care chains publish transparent self-pay pricing online and offer membership programs for uninsured patients.

When should I go to urgent care in Atlanta instead of the ER?

Choose urgent care for fevers, infections, sprains, suspected simple fractures, lacerations needing stitches, mild asthma flares, UTIs, dehydration, and minor burns. Go directly to Grady Memorial, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Northside Hospital, or Piedmont Atlanta — or call 911 — for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe trauma, head injury with loss of consciousness, severe shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, pregnancy complications, or any condition that may require admission. Grady is the appropriate destination for major trauma — it remains the only adult Level I trauma center for the entire metro after AMC's closure.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • How long are urgent care wait times in Atlanta?

Most Atlanta urgent care clinics see walk-in patients within 20 to 45 minutes. Booking through Solv typically reduces in-clinic wait to under 15 minutes. ERs at Grady and Emory frequently see multi-hour waits for non-trauma patients since Atlanta Medical Center closed in 2022.
  • Does urgent care in Atlanta accept Georgia Medicaid?

Yes. Georgia Medicaid plans (Amerigroup, CareSource, Peach State Health Plan, WellCare) are accepted at most Atlanta urgent care clinics, including Piedmont QuickCare and Wellstar Urgent Care. Pathways to Coverage members are also generally accepted.
  • What insurance do Atlanta urgent care clinics accept?

Most Atlanta urgent care clinics accept Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Kaiser Permanente Georgia, Medicare, TRICARE, and Georgia Medicaid. Self-pay rates run $135 to $225 for a basic visit.
  • When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care in Atlanta?

Go to Grady Memorial, Emory Midtown, or Piedmont Atlanta for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe trauma, head injury with loss of consciousness, severe abdominal pain, or pregnancy complications. Grady is the metro's only adult Level I trauma center.
  • Are urgent care clinics in Atlanta open on weekends and after hours?

Yes. Most Atlanta urgent care clinics are open seven days a week with extended evening hours, typically 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. Some Piedmont QuickCare and AFC locations stay open later.
  • Has Atlanta Medical Center's closure affected urgent care demand?

Yes. Wellstar's closure of Atlanta Medical Center in November 2022 displaced roughly 50,000 ER visits per year onto remaining metro hospitals. Urgent care demand has grown as patients seek faster, lower-cost alternatives to overcrowded ERs at Grady and Emory.
  • Do Atlanta urgent care clinics offer X-ray and lab work on site?

Most Atlanta urgent care clinics offer on-site X-ray, basic labs (rapid strep, flu, COVID, urinalysis, glucose), and IV fluids. More complex imaging (CT, MRI) is referred to outpatient imaging or the ER.
