Urgent Care in Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh's healthcare market is unusual in American medicine: the two dominant systems — UPMC and Highmark Health (parent of Allegheny Health Network) — are both vertically integrated insurer-provider hybrids. UPMC Health Plan and Highmark each hold roughly 28% of the Western Pennsylvania insurance market, with about 1.09 million members each, per a 2023 Pennsylvania Insurance Department competitive assessment. That means the choice of which urgent care to visit in Pittsburgh often depends on which insurer-provider network you are in — and sometimes drives Pittsburgh patients toward urgent care over the ER, where wait times can stretch. Both systems publish live urgent care wait times through patient-facing tools (UPMC's MyChart, AHN's "Find Care Now"), making it easier to compare options before walking in.

What makes Pittsburgh's urgent care market different?

Allegheny General Hospital averages a four-hour emergency department visit time, the longest in Pittsburgh, per TribLIVE reporting. UPMC Presbyterian and Shadyside hospitals average 3 hours and 54 minutes — the second longest in Allegheny County. There is a 127-minute spread between the fastest and slowest hospitals in the county. AHN announced a $43 million emergency department renovation at AGH in response to wait-time pressure highlighted by HBO Max's "The Pitt," set in a fictional Pittsburgh hospital. For patients with non-emergency needs, urgent care is typically faster — UPMC and AHN both publish live wait times for their urgent care locations through MyChart and the AHN "Find Care Now" tool.

Which urgent care providers serve Pittsburgh?

UPMC Urgent Care operates locations across the Pittsburgh metro including Bethel Park, Cranberry, Monroeville, Moon Township, Murrysville, Robinson, Shadyside, South Side, and Wexford. AHN Urgent and Express Care operates locations including Bellevue, Braddock, Pleasant Hills, Robinson, and Wexford. MedExpress (now part of UPMC) runs walk-in care across the metro with extended evening and weekend hours. AFC Urgent Care has Pittsburgh locations in McCandless and Robinson Township. Concentra primarily handles workers' compensation and occupational health. For pediatric urgent care specifically, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh operates dedicated Pediatric Express Care and the Children's Hospital Express Care Wexford location is open extended hours seven days a week.

When should you go to the ER instead of urgent care in Pittsburgh?

Go to a Pittsburgh ER — UPMC Presbyterian (regional Level I trauma), UPMC Children's Hospital (Level I pediatric trauma), Allegheny General Hospital (Level I trauma), West Penn Hospital, UPMC Mercy, or UPMC Shadyside — for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe abdominal pain, head injuries with loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, or any condition that feels like an emergency. UPMC alone treats more than 400,000 emergency patients each year across its Pittsburgh-area hospitals. Use urgent care for fevers, sore throats, ear infections, simple fractures, sprains, urinary tract infections, mild asthma flares, eye irritation, rashes, and lacerations that need stitches but are not bleeding heavily. With AGH averaging four-hour ED visits, urgent care is often a faster option for patients with non-life-threatening needs.

What conditions and services do Pittsburgh urgent care clinics handle?

Most Pittsburgh urgent care clinics handle the conditions a primary care office would see, plus on-site labs, digital X-ray, and minor procedures. Common visit reasons include strep throat and respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, sprains and simple fractures, lacerations needing stitches, eye irritation, mild asthma flares, dehydration with IV fluids, COVID-19 and flu testing, and routine wound care. UPMC Urgent Care, AHN Urgent Care, and MedExpress all connect into their parent system's electronic health record (UPMC's HealtheRecord and Epic for AHN), which simplifies follow-up imaging, specialist referrals, and ER escalation when needed. Pittsburgh's seasonal demand is heavily weighted toward respiratory illness from November through March — peak flu, RSV, and COVID-19 co-circulation with an additional bump tied to Pittsburgh's older population. Winter slip-and-fall injuries (wrist fractures, hip and back injuries, concussions) drive January and February volume in city neighborhoods that don't always see consistent salting. Summer brings sports injuries from PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, and recreational softball/biking. DOT physicals, occupational health, and pre-employment screening are widely available, particularly at MedExpress and Concentra for Pittsburgh's healthcare, logistics, and energy-sector workforce.

Does Pittsburgh urgent care accept PA Medicaid?

Yes — Pennsylvania Medicaid is administered through HealthChoices managed-care organizations, and most Pittsburgh urgent care clinics accept the major HealthChoices plans. UPMC for You is the largest Western PA HealthChoices plan and is accepted at all UPMC Urgent Care and MedExpress locations. AHN urgent care accepts Highmark Wholecare HealthChoices and most other PA Medicaid plans including Aetna Better Health, Geisinger Health Plan Family, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. About 280,000 Allegheny County residents are enrolled in HealthChoices. Independent urgent care clinics including AFC Urgent Care typically accept the major HealthChoices plans — confirm your plan when booking. Cash-pay rates in Pittsburgh urgent care run $130 to $230 for a basic visit, with extras for labs, imaging, or procedures.

What are urgent care hours and wait times in Pittsburgh?

Most UPMC Urgent Care and AHN Urgent Care locations are open from 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, with shorter weekend hours typically 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MedExpress locations often run later — until 9 p.m. — and accept walk-ins seven days a week. UPMC and AHN both publish live wait times: UPMC through MyChart, AHN through "Find Care Now" on ahn.org. True 24-hour walk-in care in Pittsburgh is available only at hospital emergency departments. Average urgent care wait times typically run 20 to 45 minutes, but Sunday evenings and post-Pirates/Steelers/Penguins game windows can run longer.

Urgent Care FAQs

  • How long is the typical urgent care wait time in Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh urgent care wait times typically run 20 to 45 minutes. UPMC publishes live wait times through MyChart; AHN through the 'Find Care Now' tool on ahn.org. Wait times are longest Sunday evenings and after major sporting events. By comparison, Allegheny General Hospital's ED averages a four-hour visit time per TribLIVE — urgent care is meaningfully faster for non-emergency needs.
  • Does Pittsburgh urgent care accept Pennsylvania Medicaid (HealthChoices)?

Yes. UPMC Urgent Care and MedExpress accept UPMC for You (the largest Western PA HealthChoices plan). AHN Urgent Care accepts Highmark Wholecare HealthChoices and most other PA Medicaid plans including Aetna Better Health, Geisinger Health Plan Family, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Independent clinics like AFC Urgent Care typically accept the major HealthChoices MCOs — confirm your specific plan when booking.
  • What insurance do Pittsburgh urgent care clinics accept?

Pittsburgh urgent care clinics generally accept commercial plans from Highmark, UPMC Health Plan, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare, plus Medicare and PA HealthChoices Medicaid. UPMC Urgent Care prioritizes UPMC Health Plan members; AHN Urgent Care prioritizes Highmark members — but both accept most commercial plans. Cash-pay rates run $130 to $230 for a basic visit.
  • When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care in Pittsburgh?

Go to a Pittsburgh ER — UPMC Presbyterian (Level I trauma), UPMC Children's (pediatric Level I trauma), AGH (Level I trauma), West Penn, UPMC Mercy, or UPMC Shadyside — for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe abdominal pain, head injuries with loss of consciousness, severe bleeding, or any life-threatening condition. Urgent care covers fevers, sprains, lacerations, UTIs, ear infections, and most respiratory illness.
  • Are there 24-hour urgent care clinics in Pittsburgh?

Most Pittsburgh urgent care clinics close between 8 and 9 p.m. weekdays. For 24-hour walk-in care, your options are hospital EDs (UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Shadyside, AGH, West Penn, UPMC Children's). Use Solv to filter for Pittsburgh urgent care clinics that are open right now if you need late-evening but non-emergency care.
  • Should I pick a UPMC or AHN urgent care?

If you have UPMC Health Plan insurance, UPMC Urgent Care or MedExpress will keep you in-network with the lowest copays. If you have Highmark insurance, AHN Urgent Care does the same. Both networks publish live wait times. Independent clinics like AFC Urgent Care accept both UPMC and Highmark, which is useful if you want flexibility or live closer to a non-system location.
  • Where can I take my child for urgent care in Pittsburgh?

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh operates dedicated Pediatric Express Care locations including Wexford and Children's Express Care, which are open extended hours seven days a week and staffed by pediatric-trained providers. For non-pediatric-specific urgent care, both UPMC Urgent Care and AHN Urgent Care locations see children. UPMC Children's Hospital ER (Level I pediatric trauma) is the right choice for pediatric emergencies.
