I was a walk-in so I expected a long wait but I was seen in less than an hour. The staff member at the desk helped me download all the necessary documents. I am happy to recommend AFC/Urgent Care in Rockville.

I’m pleased with everything and everyone at the Vista location in Harrison shopping center. I’m grateful they are there.   I would have liked to be able to schedule by phone. They told me I had to do it online. Not bad, though.

Had severe abdominal and back pain. The hospital gave me a prescription but it was not working . So the urgent care Doctor provided me with another prescription to see if that would help. It did improve my symptoms.

Had to schedule an appointment for an infection. Scheduling online was very simple. The doctor and nurse were great and had great bedside manner. The only really off putting moment was the front desk girl was talking to someone on her air buds the entire time I was there, she was talking when I got there and was still talking after my appointment. She was not friendly and literally told me I had a copay and took my credit card and went back to talking.

I was in and out in no time. It’s a fairly new facility. The family nurse practitioner, Emelda, was wonderful. Great bedside manner. Offered options for treatment that she explained very well as to the pros and cons of each. If you live or work in the neighborhood, this is the place to go.

About Glucose Tests

Diabetes is a serious disease that affects approximately 32 million Americans . Diabetes doesn’t always cause symptoms, especially in the early stages, so it’s important to have your blood glucose tested if you are at risk.

The American Diabetes Association recommends annual glucose testing for patients who are 45 or older . You should also be tested if you are younger than 45 and have major risk factors. The risk factors for diabetes include being overweight, having an immediate family member with diabetes, or being physically active less than three times a week. Having gestational diabetes or prediabetes also increases your risk of being diagnosed with diabetes later. Some ethnicities also have a higher risk of diabetes, including African Americans, Latinos, and American Indians .

Pregnant women who have risk factors for type 2 diabetes should be tested for gestational diabetes during their first trimester. These risk factors include being overweight, being over the age of 35, having a history of gestational diabetes, or belonging to an ethnic group that is at high risk of diabetes. If untreated, diabetes during pregnancy can increase the risk of complications, including preeclampsia, cesarean delivery, and even infant death .

Prediabetes is a health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in three American adults has prediabetes, and many don’t know that they have it . Without intervention, many people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within ten years. However, prediabetes can be reversed with diet and lifestyle changes. You can help manage your blood sugar by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. If you are overweight, take steps now to lose weight. Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Glucose Test FAQs

  • How much does a glucose test cost?

The cost of a blood glucose test can vary depending on several factors, such as where you have your test and the type of test that is done. Glucose tests start at around $10. If you have any questions about the type of test you need and how much it will cost, be sure to ask your doctor’s office when booking your appointment.

  • Does insurance cover glucose testing?

Many health insurance companies cover glucose testing, but there may be limitations. For example, your insurance company may pay for a glucose test once or twice a year. If you have questions about what your insurance plan covers, call your insurance company or visit their website to view your plan documents.

  • What is glucose in a blood test?

Glucose is a type of sugar in the blood of humans and other organisms and is one of the body’s main sources of fuel. You get glucose from the food you eat, or if necessary, the body can make it from other sources. After you eat, glucose is released into the bloodstream and travels throughout the body. A hormone known as insulin helps move glucose into cells, where it can be used for energy.

  • What is a glucose test?

A glucose test is a simple blood test that measures glucose levels in the blood. Having too much or too little glucose in your blood can cause medical issues and can be a sign of a more serious disease. For example, high blood glucose levels, a condition also known as hyperglycemia, can be a sign of diabetes, which is linked to complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, skin conditions, slow wound healing, and more.

  • How long should I fast before a glucose test?

Glucose tests typically require fasting for at least eight hours before the test. If you eat or drink anything before a glucose test, your blood sugar will be higher, and the test may not be accurate. Before a glucose test, you can drink water, but nothing else. It’s a good idea to schedule your appointment early in the morning so that you don’t have to go all day without eating.

  • How do I read glucose test results?

Blood glucose is measured in milligrams per deciliter, or mg/dL, which is a unit that shows the concentration of glucose in the blood. For a fasting glucose test, a normal range is 70 to 99 mg/dL. A range of 100 to 125 mg/dL could indicate prediabetes. If your fasting blood glucose is above 125 mg/dL, you may have diabetes.

  • How long does it take to get glucose test results?

The amount of time it takes to get your glucose test results may depend on where you get tested. Some doctors’ offices or testing facilities may be able to provide results immediately. However, in some cases, your blood may be sent to a lab for analysis, in which case it may take 1-2 days for the results to come back.

  • How is glucose testing done?

Glucose testing is a simple procedure that takes just a few minutes. Your health care professional will take a small sample of blood from a vein in your arm. You may feel a slight sting from the needle, but it should not be painful. You may have a bandage applied to your arm to prevent any bleeding following your blood test.

  • Can I do at-home glucose testing?

You can test your glucose at home with a blood sugar meter; however, home glucose tests are not intended to diagnose diabetes. Instead, they are recommended for people with diabetes to monitor their blood sugar regularly to prevent complications associated with diabetes. If you need a glucose test for diagnosing diabetes, it’s recommended that you make an appointment with a doctor who can interpret any unusual readings and help you develop a treatment plan if necessary.
