About

About

Sanford Health is widely recognized as the largest rural nonprofit integrated health system in the United States, headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Its origins date to 1894 with the founding of Sioux Falls Hospital. The institution adopted the Sanford name in 2007 following a landmark 400 million dollar gift from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford. Subsequent mergers with MeritCare Health System of Fargo and Medcenter One Health Systems of Bismarck substantially expanded its geographic reach into the upper Midwest. The system now employs approximately 55,000 people, serves more than two million patients annually, and maintains a health plan with nearly 415,000 members. Sanford urgent care operations are integrated within a network of clinics designed to serve dispersed rural and frontier populations across the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and surrounding states.
