What is a pulmonary function test?

The effectiveness of the lungs is determined by a pulmonary function test. The test evaluates lung volume, capacity, gas exchange, and rate of flow, as well as other lung-related characteristics. Your doctor may be able to identify and treat some lung diseases based on the results.

How are pulmonary function tests performed?

Pulmonary function tests can be performed in two ways, depending on the information your doctor needs. In some cases, your doctor may request both tests since they measure different things. To evaluate your breathing, your doctor may use a spirometer (a device with a mouthpiece) or have you stand inside an air-tight box that resembles a telephone booth.

What does a pulmonary function test measure?

A pulmonary function test evaluates several elements of lung health. I had a low grade fever and fatigue over the weekend and walked in on Monday. Waited maybe 5 minutes. Staff was attentive, ran some tests, did a chest x-ray and concluded I had some viral infection. Wrote me an Rx for conjunctivitis, but just told me to rest and drink plenty of fluids, take Ibuprofen every 4 hours, which I have been doing. As of Wednesday morning I still have the chills and fever, so I wish they would have given me a Z pack. I will see how today goes but may need to come back.

I absolutely abhor going to any kind of doctor or clinic, but this visit was as nice as it could have been- so a review seems necessary. Both ladies behind the counter were very friendly & on point with me as well as with the other patients who were coming & going. The doctor I saw was fantastic. Her bedside manner was kind, & her questions were thorough. She balanced a comforting sense of humor with confident professionalism. Unfortunately I can't remember her name... she was reasonably tall, if that helps :)
